AI is chipping away at the traditional edge that big firms have enjoyed in software, staffing and infrastructure. The document also states that 74 percent of small and medium businesses think that AI helps them compete with larger companies and 62 percent believe that they will not remain competitive in three years without AI. Small businesses are increasingly adopting AI, with 85% of owners saying they use generative AI tools, and 47% reporting revenue jumps after adoption.

There is a structural advantage to being a small business. You can move faster because you have less inertia in terms of organization and legacy systems. AI agents can offer specialized capabilities for marketing, support, forecasting, pricing and other tasks without the need for large teams.

Marketing and content are the major use cases. Seventy-seven percent of small-business owners report using text-generation tools, and AI-assisted social-media work can save considerable time and money. The paper stresses that the starting point should be a concrete problem, like stopping endless follow-up emails, rather than the simple matter of “using AI.”

Another immediate opportunity is in customer service. 51% of small businesses have adopted AI for customer service, with typical systems answering routine questions like those relating to hours, pricing, availability and appointments. One Singapore florist that was cited cut average response time from four hours to under 25 seconds, and 18% of AI-assisted orders were placed during overnight hours.

AI also assists small businesses to understand their own data through plain-language questions, and can reduce the cost of building websites, booking systems, client portals and dashboards. Examples include Delivery Hero’s AI assistant that helped participating shops and restaurants increase customer orders by 15% and tools such as Square AI and Yoco AI that provide operational and sales intelligence.

The economic numbers in the document are impressive: average first-year ROI is reported at 347%, AI-powered companies see a 31% revenue increase, payroll savings can reach 10% in year one and up to 25% in year two, and monthly savings for some SMBs can reach $500–$2,000.

The proposed roadmap is simple: Pick only one specific problem, Pick only one tool, Run a 30-day focused implementation. Measure your results, Iterate and scale what works. The document also recommends AI-ready hardware and building an AI-friendly culture.

The big idea here is that artificial intelligence can level the playing field. Low-cost AI tools enable small businesses to react more quickly, automate repetitive tasks, analyze data, develop digital instruments, and compete with larger organizations. The trick is not to try to do AI everyplace at once, but to first tackle a well-defined business problem and then to keep improving based on measured results.
